To The Bone – Netflix Review

to-the-bone-flix-1

I just want to preface this by saying I have never been affected by an eating disorder personally; this review may be impacted by that.

I seem to be spending a terrible amount of time lately watching Netflix, [sorry not sorry] especially since I have been downloading things to watch on my train commute to work. I noticed To The Bone and decided to download it because it was something I remember hearing about but couldn’t remember why. Apparently, it was the fact the movie is littered with controversy.

At the time of writing this review, I’m really conflicted about how I feel about this movie. To sum it up; it has elements of romance but isn’t a romance story, it has to feel good moment but isn’t a feel good film and also has moments of comedy but isn’t a comedic movie at the heart of it. I really enjoyed the movie but I’m still not 100% sure why. I do agree with some angry reviews that claim it glamorises anorexia. At times I feel it does because for the most part Ellen herself doesn’t seem too phased by it or like she is suffering.

I would recommend it when you have a free afternoon and you’re looking for something that will make you think a little more about life itself. It teaches that as much as someone may claim to “have it together” the majority of the time they don’t. In a very harsh way, it also taught me that not everyone can be “saved” and that sometimes learning to cope is the best available outcome.

My main issue with this film is that I felt like it was the first episode of a series and I was very disappointed that it was just a movie. I think the characters themselves are very likeable and I think Luke is absolutely great along with Kelly, her sister. My overall opinion is that it’s worth a watch when there is very little else you’d rather watch. It gives an insight into anorexia and the way people think when they are affected by such an affliction. It also briefly touches on the feelings and thoughts of the people who surround the “sufferer”. For a more in-depth review with spoilers, keep reading.

[Spoilers lie ahead]

The story follows Ellen (Lily Collins), a young woman who suffers from anorexia and has seemingly tried all treatments going other than a radical one at a group recovery home that is run by Dr Beckham (Keanu Reeves). The premise, I feel, is a good one. Like I mentioned earlier I feel like it would have benefited either from having a form of “resolution” or being made into a multi-episode series.

The lighthearted nature throughout the movie meant that I quite enjoyed it and it felt like an oddly compelling documentary in places. I myself have not been impacted by an eating disorder and I feel like it helped me to understand a little about the disorder. This being said the lack of a definitive “happy ending” did leave me a little hopeless that she would actually better and would ultimately lose her life. I can see why this ending was written but hopefully, this isn’t the case for everyone who has an eating disorder.

There is a “moment” in To The Bone between Ellen and Luke and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I am a romantic at heart and love it when two characters seemingly perfect for each other get together. The fact that Luke is such a positive person and seems to be making a lot of good progress is the main reason why I feel like he’d be great for Ellen. He also doesn’t take things too seriously but knows when to draw the line as well. I write fanfiction occasionally (i know, I’m a nerd..)  and have an overwhelming urge to write their recovery together.

The main issue I had though was that the whole “she’s an artist and some girl committed suicide” story line really confused me throughout. I still don’t really understand why the girl killed herself or what significance it had. Maybe it was what sparked the anorexia or was a result of it. If you’ve seen To The Bone can you please explain this to me?!

All in all, it’s definitely worth a watch but I would avoid letting younger kids watch it as I do agree in places it glamorises anorexia like 13 Reasons does with suicide. Worth a watch but doubtful I’d rewatch it.

3 Month Bucket List (Summer) #1

Summer Bucket List

Alright, so it’s been summer for a while here in England and I totally get that. That’s why I’ve called it my 3-month bucket list. Hopefully, I want to cross most of these things off the list before October!

  • Picnic in the woods.
If you have read my self-care post you will know that I have a thing for nature and the outdoors at the moment. I think this has something to do with being stuck inside 9-5 during the week. There’s nothing more adorable and romantic to me at the moment than the idea of taking a picnic and finding a beautiful place to enjoy it. Ideally, I want to go somewhere I haven’t been before by a lake if possible.
  • Beach at night.
This one has been something I’ve wanted to do for a while. Technically I’ve been at the beach at night with my dad when he went fishing. This time I want to see the sunset from the beach and just lay on a blanket and stare at the stars with the relaxing sounds of the waves.
  • Theme Park.
Theres something about a theme park that screams summer to me. Coincidentally my manager recently mentioned going to the beach near me that has a theme park at one end. Maybe i can watch the sunset too and kill two birds with one stone.
  • Outside Cinema.
This is the something that i have seen and heard a lot of American YouTubers and programmes talking about (Riverdale). It isn’t, however something i’ve heard about here in England until recently. It seems to be a phase in this country at the moment but i can totally see why. The only issue being our beautiful weather…
  • Go somewhere new.
This is an overarching theme at the moment since i recently got my first passport and have never in my life left the country. Terrible i know. At the moment this relates more to within the UK and we’ll leave the overseas travelling for when i have more time and money.

This is part one of my Summer Bucket List. Expect photographic evidence of all of the above. Do any of you have a bucket list or think i’ve missed something crucial?

10 Ways to Practice Self-Care

July is my birthday month and the fact that i’m going to be 24 has led to me thinking about my life and what i want to achieve (better late than never, i know). One of the goals i featured in my July Goals post is to practice self-care once a day. This being said i wasn’t very sure what constituted self-care so i’ve devised a list of 10 things you can do to practice self-care; some easier than others.

  1. Self development books/podcasts/blog posts/videos.
This is the most important tip, to me at least, because i feel like the best way to take time for myself and care for myself is to better myself where i can. I’ve been reading “You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero and listening to the Tony Robbins, Dave Ramsey and Gretchen Rubin podcasts as well. Collectively i’m learning to manage my money, improve my life overall and also to become happier.
  2. Spa night.
I’m talking the full works here: face mask, hair mask, candles, bath, wine, painting nails etc. Anything you can do that feels luxurious and that you know will benefit you, even if it’s just short term. It’s important to pamper yourself when you can and it can increase your confidence which is never a bad thing!
  3. Take a nap.
This one especially applies if you are constantly busy during the week trying to juggle a number of commitments and a demanding job. At the moment i feel like i could do with more sleep most of the time. 6-8 hours are advisable

July 2017 Goals!

Goals.png

Happy 3rd July to all of my friends. I have decided to document my goals as I have been reading and researching productivity and how to make the most of my time. One of the main things I have learnt is to tell someone as it helps you stay accountable. So; this is me telling you guys. This is actually the first month I’ve ever had goals so I will report back at the end of this month and then report on the next month’s goals as well.

  1. Lose 10lbs. So, like most people my age I am currently trying to lose weight and get healthier. Those of you who know me, know that I eat very unhealthily normally so I’m trying to change that! The plan is to lose 10lbs. I will be going to the gym more, trying to eat out less and also walking wherever possible. If you have a Fitbit we should be friends!
  2. Read/finish 1 book. Alongside trying to become healthier physically I am trying to improve myself mentally as well. Read/finish 1 book is a goal for me at the moment because I have so many books I want to read but also I have a terrible habit of not finishing books. Find out what I’m reading on GoodReads here.
  3. Go to the Gym 14 times. I have found that the idea of going certain times a week is harder to achieve because some weeks I am busier than others. It also means if I get behind then I can binge go to the gym. My new boyfriend is also a gym/fitness enthusiast so that definitely helps! 🙂
  4. Practice self-care once a day. I have recently found out that my employer does a year’s free subscription to HeadSpace; a meditation app. I am trying to practice self-care once a day because that is the first thing I neglect when I’m stressed. I am aiming to at least do a meditation session a day.
  5. Blog once a week. This one is very self-explanatory. I have been meaning to blog regularly for years and finally feel like I know what I want to blog about. I’m going to focus on music, minimalism and self-development. So far I am keeping up with the once a month blogging thing. I’m so proud. 😉

Do you have goals for the month of July or longer term goals? If you do then let me know!

#NewMusicMonday The Chainsmokers – Memories… Do Not Open Review

602bb60e87d74209cc8bcc3e43d24a21.1000x1000x1

#NewMusicMonday this Monday is the album that has been accompanying my commute to the work for the last few weeks. Memories…Do Not Open is the first full-length album by the Chainsmokers and has received mixed reviews from acclaimed critics.

I have to say even though the majority of the songs sound very similar I still go back to this album when I need a pick me up. I sing therefore I focus more on the vocals and there are some genius vocal tracks on this album!

The One is the first track on the album and I feel like this was a good decision because it sums up the rest of the album. Catchy piano and synth tracks with beautiful edited and unedited vocals thrown in for good measure. I should mention that a few of the tracks contain expletive but for someone with a potty mouth myself this is a positive in my eyes.

The “Genius” insights from Spotify explain how this song was written about needing more balance between work and social commitments which unfortunately is characterised by missing a wedding.

“Last Day Alive” is the reason I decided to give this album a chance. I am a huge fan of Florida Georgie Line and country music in general therefore this track really pulled me in. The overly edited sound to this track loses what I love about FGL but is definitely a foray into mainstream music if they ever wanted to pursue that.

“Something Just Like This” and “Paris” are the stand out tracks and were the singles that turned from the Chainsmokers from one hit wonders with “#Selfie” for me. {As an aside; I really hated #Selfie. With a passion.}If I’m entirely honest I find Paris catchy and “Something Like This” is a really nice song to sing. I also think the mix of Coldplay and the track by The Chainsmokers is a really good choice.

“Young” and “My Type” are my favourites from the album by far. The pre-chorus and chorus in “Young” are the lines that I find myself singing CONSTANTLY whenever I am doing menial tasks. I like the mix of guitar, piano and synth on this track. I think it hints that this kind of music would still survive in an acoustic setting.

“My Type” introduces Emily Warren. She is an amazing vocalist and is an award winning songwriter. I find it fascinating how people can be so well recognised but don’t become a “household name” until they actually take the microphone and sing the songs they have written. She features on two of the tracks. “My Type” is by far my favourite of the two and talks about something most people I know can relate to in some way or another. The idea that they have a type and that they know they’re not a good choice for them but like an addict they keep going back. I think this song is one of the best written in terms of lyricism.

Overall I’d say if you’re into dance music with strong vocal tracks then definitely give this a listen.

This is a must for me this summer and I’ve already added it to my summer playlist!

KB Chaos is born!

KB Chaos.

You’re right. I’m not entirely sure why I went with this name. I’m also not sure why I went with an asymmetrical logo but I think it’s pretty cool.

This is just a quick post to say hello. I was using the KBBlog and then the domain got too expensive and expired. Therefore I took that as a sign from the universe that things need to change!

The plan is to post about planning, organisation, general lifestyle and music as well. Maybe some games thrown in for good measure as well.

I’m Kayleigh or KB :), I’m 23 and currently working full time as a customer rep at a large company. I enjoy video games, singing, playing the guitar, reading and binge watching Netflix.
